REZUMAT ANTIMICROBIAL AGENTS IN PERIODONTAL DISEASE THERAPY: RATIONALE AND USE OF THE TRICLOSANPVM/MA COPOLYMER IN THE MANAGEMENT OF GINGIVITIS. DATA FROM A CONSENSUS REPORT. PART I. Stefan-Ioan Stratul, Doina Onisei, Darian Rusu Triclosan is currently one of the most researched antimicrobial agents for the oral cavity. A consensus meeting organized by Colgate-Palmolive Romania took place on 15 February 2008 in Bucharest to reunite the conclusions of Romanian opinion leaders regarding the applicability of triclosan in dental medicine, and the triclosan-PVM/MA copolymer technology. The article reflects the data issued by the consensus meeting regarding the value of triclosan as therapeutic agent of the periodontal disease. With respect to the use of the triclosan–PVM/MA copolymer in the management of gingivitis, the conclusion of the literature is that toothpaste containing the triclosan – PVM/MA copolymer combination offers a pronounced antibacterial effect and reduces bleedings, especially in areas initially presenting more plaque and inflammation as well as in inaccessible areas. The quantity and viability of bacterial plaque are diminished even 12 hours after teeth brushing with this formulation. The synergic antiinflammatory effect of the triclosan–PVM/MA copolymer combination can explain the bleeding reduction in areas with unmodified quantities of plaque. Received for publication: Oct. 11, 2008. OBJECTIVE In vitro testing of antimicrobial agents is an important tool in the testing hierarchy, and may provide interesting insights into their potential clinical efficacy.
